EEG Differences Between Music Imagery and Music Perception

چکیده

This study examines the differences of EEG signals between music perception and music imagery. The subjects were asked to listen to a musical piece they knew by heart, to imagine listening to the piece and to mentally count backwards. The presences of different frequencies during the 3 conditions were determined and the strongest effects are presented in this paper. The frontal part of the scalp showed an increase in gamma-band activity during the musical conditions, but also during the counting condition. It seems that music listening or imagination has the effect of more gamma-band activity in the frontal cortex. Furthermore performing mental tasks has the effects of more gamma-band activity in this same region.

Neural Correlates of Boredom in Music Perception

Introduction: Music can elicit powerful emotional responses, the neural correlates of which have not been properly understood. An important aspect about the quality of any musical piece is its ability to elicit a sense of excitement in the listeners. In this study, we investigated the neural correlates of boredom evoked by music in human subjects. Methods: We used EEG recording in nine sub...

Music perception and imagery in EEG: alpha band effects of task and stimulus.

Previous work has shown that mental imagination of sound generally elicits an increase of alpha band activity (8-12 Hz) in the electroencephalogram (EEG). In addition, alpha activity has been shown to be related to aspects of music processing. In the current study, EEG signatures were investigated for perception and imagery of two different natural musical phrases. The responses are compared be...

Common Components in Perception and Imagery of Music: an EEG study

Background and Aims Mental imagery has been a subject of investigation for a considerable time. Recent investigations suggest that there is overlap in the electrical brain activations for imagination and perception of music (Schaefer et al., 2009, 2011a; Vlek et al., 2011). The current work is a new analysis of four datasets that investigate imagination of music, aiming to clarify the common pr...

Towards Music Imagery Information Retrieval: Introducing the OpenMIIR Dataset of EEG Recordings from Music Perception and Imagination

Music imagery information retrieval (MIIR) systems may one day be able to recognize a song from only our thoughts. As a step towards such technology, we are presenting a public domain dataset of electroencephalography (EEG) recordings taken during music perception and imagination. We acquired this data during an ongoing study that so far comprises 10 subjects listening to and imagining 12 short...

Relationship between Intelligence Quotient and Musical Ability in Children with Cochlear Implantation

Introduction: Children with cochlear implants (CIs) may experience few opportunities for positive musical experiences, and musical perception is therefore often not sufficiently developed. This paper investigates and discusses the relationship between intelligence quotient (IQ) and musical ability in children with CIs compared with children with normal hearing.                                  ...
